Behavior Modification
What is it?
The main objective of Behavior Modification is to identify and resolve unacceptable behavioral issues that your dog is exhibiting and modify that behavior. We use a systematic approach to help your dog un-learn behaviors by changing the way he reacts to a situation or stimuli (person, thing, animal, etc.).
What to expect
Initially, we will focus on what your pup does to determine what is causing the reaction (the “trigger”) and what internal processing is resulting in the unwanted behavior (anxiety, physical response such as fight or flight, etc.). Once we have identified the triggering event and the internal response, we will then work to change the behavior by addressing the underlying cause. The goal is not just to temporarily suppress the behavior, but to change it by teaching your dog how he is expected to behave as well as to change his attitude about the trigger. For instance, if men in hats evoke a fear response we will expose the dog to men in hats and show him that he does not need to be afraid. By changing how he perceives the trigger, he can let go of the fear in order to behave in an appropriate manner.
Behavior modification is a slow process that requires patience and consistency both in and out of class. For dogs with learned behavior that must be changed, slow and steady wins the race.
There are many undesirable behaviors our canine friends can exhibit and the training approach will differ slightly for each behavior. Here are some of the most common examples:
Aggression
Anxiety
Barking/Vocalizing
Chewing
Digging
Impulse control
Jumping
Reactivity
Potty training
Leash pulling
